Frequently Asked Questions

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

As we age, we lose some of the skin’s ‘building blocks’ such as collagen and fat, which help prevent to skin becoming saggy, allowing fine lines and wrinkles to occur. Our skin can become thinner, and lines more visible.

Dermal filler helps as it helps to restore our skin to its former youthful appearance.

The material is carefully injected into different layers of the skin depending on the type of filler selected and the patient’s needs. Dermal fillers are available in different thicknesses and viscosity that match to the patients needs. The thicker products are generally reserved for deep folds or wrinkles, whilst smoother product is used to plump out fine lines and wrinkles.

What Are The Benefits Of Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are often the preferred treatment to cosmetic surgery because of the risks associated with general anaesthetics and cosmetic surgery and their cost effectiveness. Results are instant: patients can see how much they like the treatment as it progresses and can request for a more dramatic effect if they desire at the time of treatment.

What Are The Risks Of Dermal Fillers?

All dermal filler treatments have the risk of temporary bruising around the injection site, swollen facial features during the initial healing period and infection at injection site. These risks are higher when treatments are performed in unsterile environments such as hairdressers, beauty clinics or home environments and by inexperienced or unqualified practitioners.

The side effects and risks associated with dermal fillers will be discussed with the practitioner at consultation.

Can I Wear Lipstick After Lip Enhancement?

There is no medical reason why you cannot apply makeup including lip gloss or lipstick directly after lip fillers. A treatment can leave the lips feeling slightly tender, so it is recommended that you leave it a day before applying makeup to the treatment area.

Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

Lip fillers are a non-surgical procedure, with no invasive surgery, cuts or stitches on the lips. Some patients can feel slight discomfort with this injectable treatment, but usually this is only very mild. Most patients will just feel a tiny scratch as the injection is applied and a tingling sensation as the filler is injected.

How Do I Reduce Swelling After Lip Fillers?

There can occasionally be slight swelling in the lip area after having the treatment carried out. The amount of lip filler used on a patient can also have an impact on the risk of swelling occurring. This is a completely normal side effect of lip injections and tends to show through after two days of treatment, before reducing and returning to normality after two weeks. If lip swelling does occur, then patients can apply ice to the lips using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease any swelling, itching, bruising or pain that may occur as a result of the treatment.
